Description
Fraction Tiles are the single most important manipulative you can have for teaching fractions.
A set of 51 proportionally-sized pieces representing a whole, halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths, tenths and twelfths in 9 distinct colours with printing on each piece. Each tile uses the same-sized whole.
Fraction tiles help students see that the same “whole” can be broken up into different equal-size parts. When students move the strips and put them side by side, they can visualize the fractional amounts.
Skills you can teach directly by using fraction tiles include comparing and ordering fractions, mixed numbers, finding common denominators, equivalent fractions, and all fraction operations, as well as ratios. The key is in asking questions and guiding kids to vocalize the patterns they see. They will start to see relationships and discover “tricks” for themselves. Then, not only will they no longer need the manipulatives, they will understand how and why the math works.
