Description
A new coach, a new captain, a new era for English rugby and according to Eddie Jones, things are going to get even better…
Thirteen long years after Martin Johnson led England to Grand Slam Glory in 2003, the “likeable rogue” Dylan Hartley captained a young and developing team with an average age of just 24 to a clean sweep in rugby’s greatest Championship.
England’s opening match saw a solid performance against a potentially dangerous Scotland but in the end it was a comfortable victory to England – Scotland 9 England 15.
In Rome, Jones wanted England to give Italy a “good hiding” and that is exactly what transpired – Italy 9 England 40.
Ireland represented more dangerous opponents but England pulled clear in the second half with tries from Anthony Watson and Mike Brown – England 21 Ireland 10.
Wales, England’s World Cup demons, were yet another step up in class but despite a passionate fight back from Wales England held on for their fourth successive RBS 6 Nations win – England 25 Wales 21.
And so to Paris, never an easy venue, especially with a Grand Slam on the line, but a tense 31-21 victory over France clinched the grand prize.
