Tetleys Challenge Cup Final 2014 – Castleford Tigers 10 Leeds Rhinos 23
Blockbusting winger Ryan Hall demonstrated his awesome power and strength by grabbing two stunning tries as Leeds finally ended their Challenge Cup jinx.
After going through the agony of six consecutive final defeats since their last Wembley win in 1999, the Rhinos shed their losing habit with a 23-10 victory over Castleford Tigers. Hall claimed the Lance Todd Trophy as man of the match, but the sheer joy etched on the face of Kevin Sinfield as he received the famous old Cup told the remarkable story of redemption.
Tom Briscoe touched down for the game s first score, before Castleford hooker Daryl Clark responded to keep it tight early on. However, when Super League s most prolific try-scorer Danny McGuire and then Hall both went over, Leeds had a commanding 16-4 half-time lead.
The Tigers, looking for their first final triumph since 1986, roared back after the break to set up a nervous final quarter. Michael Shenton set up Oliver Holmes to make it a one-score game, but Hall s devastating hand-off produced a second try to all but secure the trophy.
When Sinfield’s conversion went over after rebounding off both uprights, the Leeds fans knew it was going to be their day – and when McGuire put over a drop-goal with four minutes to go it was celebration time.
