At the forefront is Harry (Jonah Hauer-King), a translator who falls for a young Polish woman despite having a girlfriend back in Britain, Lois (Julia Brown), who is facing struggles of her own.The cast also includes Helen Hunt, Sean Bean and Zofia Wichlacz.

Series 2
The return of the drama following people from all walks of life during the Second World War this time follows the events of 1940. RAF pilots are sent to destroy German bombers prowling the skies above Manchester, with rescue operations mounted on the streets below. As the Manchester Blitz gets underway, Robina’s household has another visitor as Jan’s sister Kasia arrives. However, it soon becomes clear that the psychological scars of her experiences in Warsaw will not fade easily. Harry prepares to rejoin his unit as the fighting reaches North Africa.

The story begins in October 1940 as young mum Lois (Julia Brown) is now an ambulance driver. Harry (Jonah Hauer-King), a Special Operations Executive and the father of Lois’s baby, takes his Polish wife Kasia (Zofia Wichlacz) to meet his stern mother Robina (Lesley Manville). Away from Manchester, a German couple discover their daughter has been chosen for Lebensborn, an initiative set up by Himmler to increase the number of children who meet Nazi ideas of racial purity, and in North Africa, Indian Sappers are bullied by British troops into minesweeping.
